A great idea for a map in this game would be the Empress of Ireland. Appearently all (or most) of the ships in this game are based off of real ones around the 20's era that sunk or went missing, and so I think the Empress of Ireland would be perfect. She sunk after she was hit by another ship when it was foggy and sunk in only 14 minutes killing 1,012 passengers and crew out of the 1,477 on board. This ship wasn't in the 20's but you put the Andrea Doria in this game and, if I'm not mistaken, Andrea Doria sunk in the 50's. For more information on the Empress of Ireland go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empress_of_Ireland

And here are some pics of her:

I hope you consider putting her in the game. It looks like a good ship to play on.

Sound great...
The map could be in a foggy outer area...
We got several outside conditions already, and now a nice fogmap would be great, i really like the extra suspence fog adds to games :D

I never thought of putting it in a foggy area. That's a great idea! Fog adds suspense to any regular game, so think of the suspense it will add in The Ship.

People are going to try to avoid the fog so there should be some pretty good weapons located on the outer decks so people will risk it trying to get the weapons. Also, people shouldn't be able to see eachother in fog until they're a certain amount of feet away from eachother so witnesses won't be able to see a murder as easily on the outer decks.

Great idea marcquish, and keep the posts coming everyone. (I'd like to hear one from a dev about if they would like it in the game.)

Hi there,

Thanks for the suggestion. She looks like a real peach of a ship. We did indeed base the names of the vessels on ones from real life, espescially those with a bit of mystery surrounding them. Personaly, i tried to draw on the real ocean liners the Queen Mary, and the Titanic, although both are so collosal there was no chance of being able to build them "to scale", and i suspect they would be so large that the gameplay would suffer (although i do like the larger maps myself). I particularly like the style of the prow of the ship, where the bridge sections drop down to meet the deck.

I also like the idea of fog, although as I recollect last time we tried it, the fog was spread evenly throughout the ship, instead of just being outside it! It's gonna take a bit of research to make that right.

We are releasing two new maps in September, both of which are looking fantastic, and I am working on another one myself, so expect more maps to follow!

Oooh that is indeed a nice looking ship :) As Red Cloud said its much too large to attempt to build a real-scale replica of, but the overall design and style could provide the basis for a cool level. I was hoping to build a ship set at night, so fog would certainly be a nice combination with that if we can find a way around Source's fog system limitations.

Only make about 3 (maybe 4) decks accessible, and that should solve that. It will still be a large map though but, heck so is Cyclops. Besides, I think this ship is smaller than the Andrea Doria, so you should be able to make it work. I just think she would be a great ship for the game, and would rather play on The Empress of Ireland than a ship inspired by it (either way I still think it's cool that you are considering my idea, thanks!!)

The thing is though, a real ship design wouldn't really work in the game. You'll notice that levels in the game are rarely the sort of layout you'd actually find in a ship, because if they were they would have some exceptionally boring and repetitive areas. Ships tend to have huge corridors with dozens of identical cabins leading from them (a trait found on the Empress of Ireland too, by the looks of that side on shot), and that isn't going to provide particularly enjoyable gameplay. Instead, levels tend to be more scaled down - a corridor with maybe 4 cabins leading from it instead, to make sure players don't get fed up searching effectively the same room over and over. You'll also notice that the decks aren't really the length of an actual ship. Doing that would make the travel time from the bow to the aft far too long and again hurt gameplay.

Suffice to say that if the map were to be built, it wouldn't be an exact replica of any set of its decks. Instead, it would take the design style of the ship and work from there, designed for gameplay as opposed to outright authenticity :)

I dont think he was suggesting to make the map completely lke the real ship layout...
That would practicly be impossible :)

Also, about... 15 minutes into the game why not make a breech in the hull? but instead of 14 mins make it around 10 ish, it would be less time to make it to safety! the lifeboats would be a cool place to kill a quarry also...

That's going into a whole new game mode, so it will most likely never happen. People have suggested game modes very similar to what you said here: http://forum.theshiponline.com/showthread.php?t=1431. I'm just hoping for the map of the Empress of Ireland (of course made a lot smaller for the sake of gameplay) to be added to the game. Thank you, devs, for at least considering my suggestion so far. :)
